About SMART

About SMART

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is the North Bay’s passenger rail service providing a safe, reliable and congestion-free transportation option for Marin and Sonoma counties. The current 45-mile system includes stations in the Sonoma County Airport area, Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Cotati, Petaluma, Novato, San Rafael, and Larkspur. SMART’s system also includes a bicycle and pedestrian pathway along the rail corridor. Future extensions are planned for Windsor, Healdsburg and Cloverdale. The full project will provide 70 miles of passenger rail service, connecting SMART passengers with jobs, education centers, retail hubs and housing along the Sonoma-Marin corridor, and a bicycle-pedestrian pathway.

Accessibility

SMART provides rail transit service that is accessible to passengers with disabilities. SMART’s platforms and trains are fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Clipper Card vending machines on SMART platforms are also ADA compliant. SMART trains have ADA accessible restrooms and seating. Onboard SMART personnel are available to assist with onboarding and exiting the train, and with any other needs that may arise.

Bikes on SMART

Bikes are welcome on board SMART trains. Each two-car SMART train has spaces for up to 24 bikes. SMART stations also have bike storage including bike racks and secured bike lockers. SMART is also exploring partnerships to provide bike sharing near some of its stations.

  • Bike Parking at SMART Stations

SMART rail stations have two options for bike parking: secured bike lockers and U-racks. SMART's secured bike lockers are a part of the BikeLink system, and cost approximately 5 cents per hour. To use a BikeLink locker, passengers must have a BikeLink account with stored value. Creating an account and storing value can be done three ways:

  1. Through the BikeLink app,
  2. With an activated BikeLink Card available for purchase through BikeLink’s website; or
  3. With a Clipper Card.

Riding with Children

Young children must be supervised and strollers should be clear of the aisle when seated and the train is moving. SMART allows children under the age of 5 years old to ride for free. Youth ages 5 to 18, receive a 50% discount. Information on fares and discounts can be found on our Fares Page.

Rider Etiquette

SMART asks that all passengers be considerate and courteous while riding the train, so that all passengers can have a pleasant experience and enjoy the ride.
