Sonoma County Airport Station Temporary Closure | Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit

System Closure

Temporary closure of Airport station during weekends in April

There's a train coming to town!

SMART is preparing to launch passenger rail service to Windsor in late Spring 2025. As part of this process, the Sonoma County Airport station will be temporarily closed on weekends in April during the Systems Testing period. All other SMART stations will remain open. The Sonoma County Airport station will be closed on the following weekends:

  • Saturday and Sunday, April 5–6
  • Saturday and Sunday, April 12–13
  • Sunday, April 20
  • (tentatively) Saturday and Sunday, April 26–27

Systems Testing to be completed throughout April

Throughout the month of April, test trains will operate 7 days a week between the Sonoma County Airport station and the Windsor station from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. During testing, trains will sound their horns intermittently, as required by federal safety regulations. Grade crossing warning systems, such as lights, gates, and bells will be operated during the Systems Testing period.

Systems Testing is done to evaluate the safe operation of warning devices, train control system, and proper speed enforcement throughout the railway extension to Windsor.

Use of train horns and Quiet Zone

The Town of Windsor is in the process of applying to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to establish a Quiet Zone. Once approved and implemented, routine train horn use at designated crossings will be eliminated, except in emergency or safety-critical situations.

During systems testing and until a Quiet Zone is established, the Federal Railroad Administration requires SMART's engineers to use the train horn when approaching grade crossings. As a result, train horns will be heard from Airport Boulevard to Windsor.

We understand that this may cause temporary noise disruptions and appreciate the community’s patience as we work to ensure a safe and successful start of service.

Trip planning and alternative transit options

For those seeking alternative transit routes, apps such as Transit, Google Maps, or Apple Maps can help you plan your trip. Sonoma County Transit’s Route 62 offers a bus connection between the SMART Airport station and the Transit Mall on 2nd Street in Downtown Santa Rosa.

SMART Customer Service is available Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM, at (707) 794-3330 or email: customerservice@sonomamarintrain.org for trip-planning assistance.

SMART Connect shuttle

During weekends in April the SMART Connect Airport shuttle will continue to operate within its service zone. Passengers wishing to connect from the train to the Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (STS) will be able to use the Ride Pingo app to schedule shuttle trips between the Santa Rosa North station on Guerneville Road and the STS Airport.
