Petaluma, CA – On November 20, the Board of Directors of the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District approved the launch of a new train service schedule featuring expanded service on weekdays, increased frequency to carry more passengers during peak commute hours and earlier train service on weekends.

The expanded schedule will go into effect on January 1, 2020, and is the product of months of planning and coordination with regional transit agencies to offer more efficient connections to the Larkspur ferry and bus service throughout Sonoma and Marin County.  The schedule also features convenient transit links for passengers wishing to take the train to and from the Sonoma County Airport.

“SMART’s new schedule and improved connectivity to regional transit offers a climate-friendly, affordable, and reliable transportation alternative for commuters as well as for people make leisure trips to the North Bay,” said SMART Board Chairman Gary Phillips.

NEW Larkspur and Novato Downtown Stations:  At the November 20, Board of Directors meeting, SMART General Manager, Farhad Mansourian, was pleased to announce that service to the Larkspur and Novato Downtown stations would begin in mid-December.

The Larkspur station offers a vital connection to the larger Bay Area via the Golden Gate Ferry.  In addition to connecting North Bay commuters to jobs in the Bay, the Larkspur station serves as a gateway for tourists wishing to visit Marin and Sonoma County.   SMART is partnering with business leaders to attract visitors to use the train for recreation and tourism in the beautiful North Bay. “The Novato Downtown station will be a game-changer for businesses and restaurants in the heart of Novato. Visitors will be able to take advantage of Marin County’s remarkable outdoor recreation, art and culture, shopping and dining—and leave the car at home,” said SMART Board Director Eric Lucan.

Between now and the end of the year, SMART will continue to operate on its current timetable—this means that the Larkspur and Downtown Novato stations will open for passenger service with the existing timetable.  On January 1, 2020 the entire SMART system will switch to the new expanded and improved timetable.
