Convenient Fare Payment Options
SMART offers two convenient options to pay for fares: Clipper® and the SMART eTicketing app.
Clipper is the Bay Area’s all-in-one transit card, for fare payment. With Clipper, riders can travel seamlessly between transit agencies throughout the Bay Area. Using a Clipper card is easy. Cardholders simply load cash value or purchase passes online at ClipperCard.com, at any participating transit agency, or at station fare machines.
SMART offers a 50 percent discount on both standard fares and the 31-Day Pass to youth (5-18), seniors (65 and over), and passengers with disabilities. Youth and seniors can receive these discounts by applying for a discount Clipper card through an online PDF application at www.ClipperCard.com/discounts or by participating transit agency. For passengers with disabilities, please click here to learn about the Regional Transit Connection Clipper card. Discount Clipper cards are not available at SMART stations.
For those who wish to purchase fare for multiple riders, or who might not have a Clipper card, we recommend the use of SMART’s mobile ticketing app. The mobile ticketing app offers discount fares of 50 percent for youth and senior riders. Transfer discounts and the SMART 31-Day Pass are not available through the app.
If you are using the mobile ticketing app for your SMART ride, please purchase and activate your e-ticket before boarding.
